Day 5 - Wednesd
ay, September 12, 2001
We got up at 6:15 and had breakfast at 7. Then we were out by 7:45 when we went to Venice. It was COLD. Probably in the high 40's. Surprising.
We took a water taxi and got to St. Marks in the downtown area. We went to a glass factory and it was nice but very commercial. Then we looked for an internet kiosk where we communicated with Ted, our son in New York. At 11 we went on a gondola ride - it was very commercial, one follows the other but we were given a feeling for what it is like.
Around noon we went by water taxi to the island of Burano where we saw homes painted in very bright colors. Quite nice. Romano's for lunch after a short walk - it was excellent but way too much food for lunch. Lots of fish but that is to be expected -right on the ocean. Several courses - Risoto, then seafood pasta, salad, fried white fish, fried sardine, calamari, sardines, fruit cocktail, cookies, and amaretto. All this with bread, all the white wine - excellent - and water.
We returned to the main island, and took a walk with Craig Cropsey while others shopped. We sat at an outdoor cafe and talked about the September 11 tragedy in NY and the Pentagon. We took the water taxi back and got in the bus to come home. Good time and we are glad we are doing the extra tours also.
